Argentina’s Informal Employment Climbs to 43.2% in Q2 2025

A new UBA–CONICET analysis links non‑registered work to higher poverty risk, with especially severe pay deficits.

Overview

  • The EDIL (IIEP‑UBA/CONICET) report, using INDEC’s EPH data, shows informality up 1.6 percentage points from Q2 2024 to Q2 2025.
  • Informality among salaried workers reached 37.7%, the highest comparable level since 2008 except for Q2 2022, and salaried jobs made up 63% of all informal work.
  • By category, rates were 62.5% for the self‑employed and 22.2% for employers in Q2 2025.
  • Youth are hardest hit, with 63% of 16–24 year‑olds in informal jobs, and informality is strongly associated with poverty, as 42% of informal workers lived in poor households versus 24% of all employed.
  • Pay gaps are stark, with 40% of informal workers earning below the individual basic basket versus 5% of formal workers, and incidence ranges from 75.4% in domestic work and construction to 9% in the public sector, with higher rates in Noroeste, Cuyo and Nordeste than in Patagonia, GBA and Pampeana.
