Argentina’s Formal Payrolls Fall to New Post‑2023 Low, 205,000 Jobs Lost Since Milei Took Office

A new UBA analysis shows a private‑sector‑led retreat alongside provincial credit guarantees for small firms.

  • In July 2025, registered salaried employment totaled 10,096,000, down 14,000 year over year and at its lowest level since the late‑2023 contraction, according to IIEP/UBA.
  • Since November 2023, formal payrolls have shrunk by about 205,000 jobs (≈2%), with 127,000 losses in the private sector and 58,000 in the public sector, and domestic work down an estimated 21,000.
  • Construction remains deeply depressed with roughly 91,800 jobs lost from its May 2023 peak, while July showed additional declines in mining (−0.8%), real estate (−0.4%), industry (−0.3%) and personal services (−0.3%).
  • Private formal employment fell in 16 provinces in July, led by percentage drops in Chubut and Santa Cruz (−1.2% each), with Buenos Aires Province and CABA accounting for the largest shares of the national decline.
  • In Salta, CEPA reports 11,253 registered jobs and 455 employers lost between November 2023 and July 2025, concentrated among SMEs, and the legislature approved FOGASAL to guarantee MiPyME credit with provincial and CFI funding.
