Argentina's Final Falkor (too) Expedition Sets December Launch to Probe Methane Cold Seeps

ROV SuBastian will conduct at least 15 deep dives with real-time public streaming.

Overview

  • The CONICETSchmidt Ocean Institute mission departs Buenos Aires on December 14 and returns to Puerto Madryn on January 10, 2026.
  • Surveys will target the Salado and Malvinas basins plus the largely unexplored Colorado–Rawson sector where cold seeps are suspected.
  • The campaign is the third and final Falkor (too) project in Argentine waters under SOI’s open-access conditions for data and imagery.
  • Biologist María Emilia Bravo leads a 25‑member interdisciplinary team that includes 17 Argentine researchers and international specialists such as marine ecologist Lisa Levin.
  • Operations will use SuBastian to depths of about 4,500 meters with acoustic mapping and high‑volume environmental DNA sampling, and some outlets report a research focus on microplastics in deep‑sea ecosystems.
