Argentina’s Core Farm Belt Logged 20% More Rain in 2025 After Uneven December

A BCR–GEA audit finds widespread station increases with lingering topsoil deficits that keep crop risk.

Overview

  • In the región núcleo, annual rainfall averaged 1,222 mm in 2025, about 260 mm more than in 2024, according to the Rosario Board of Trade’s GEA.
  • Of the 36 BCR–GEA stations, 90% recorded higher totals year over year, while Noetinger, Idiazábal and Hernando were slightly lower by 4%, 1% and 8%, respectively.
  • Recurrent winter–spring events drove the surplus, but December averaged only 80 mm regionally—roughly 27% below the historic 110 mm—with sharp local contrasts across the core area.
  • Northern provinces saw extraordinary December downpours and flooding, led by Corrientes with about 530 mm, alongside high totals in Ituzaingó, Resistencia, Oberá, Federal and Las Lomitas.
  • Despite the annual surplus, first‑meter soil moisture remains generally from regular to scarce, and early January brought patchy relief in the core plus severe storms with hail and strong winds in parts of Córdoba and Salta.
