Argentina's Cheque Rejections Hit Record High in December 2025

Central bank data point to a financing squeeze that is hitting small and mid-sized firms hardest.

Overview

  • Authorities reported 119,285 cheques rejected for insufficient funds in December, up 205.2% year over year and equal to 2.2% of all cheques by count.
  • The value of those dishonoured cheques reached $347,638 million pesos, a 311.3% nominal increase and 212.6% in real terms versus a year earlier.
  • Overall, 5.36 million cheques were compensated in December for $22.4 trillion pesos, with insufficient-funds rejections representing 1.6% of total amounts.
  • The deterioration accelerated late in 2025, with monthly rejections averaging about 65,000 from January to September and roughly 110,000 from October to December.
  • Electronic cheques dominated activity, accounting for 60% of instruments and 82.2% of amounts, as analysts warned the spike signals mounting liquidity stress for PyMEs.
