Argentina’s Central Bank Buys $562 Million in January as IMF Praises Faster Reserve Build

Corporate dollar issuance provided the liquidity the bank used to rebuild reserves.

Overview

  • The BCRA has purchased about $562–$563 million so far this month, including $47 million on Thursday after a $187 million daily peak earlier in the week.
  • IMF spokeswoman Julie Kozack said the reserve accumulation started faster than anticipated and could strengthen prospects for durable market access.
  • Telecom placed $600 million in 10-year notes at 8.625% as John Deere sold $80 million and Scania $41 million, while YPF and Banco Macro signaled additional dollar deals.
  • Part of the Central Bank’s buying occurred through off-screen block trades as on-screen volumes thinned and the official exchange rate edged lower.
  • Gross reserves stood at $44.646 billion after a $71 million daily drop but remain $3.481 billion higher in 2026, with country risk easing to about 571 points.
