Argentina's Auto Market Cools in August After Months of Gains

Industry groups blame election uncertainty, dollar volatility, high borrowing costs.

Overview

  • Used-vehicle transfers totaled 167,525 in August, down 6.60% from July and 5.05% year over year, according to the Cámara del Comercio Automotor.
  • New-car registrations reached 54,664, a 13% month-to-month decline that still marked a 31.7% increase versus August 2024, Siomaa and Acara reported.
  • Cumulative January–August used-car activity rose to 1,265,292 units, up 15.08% from 2024, showing the broader recovery remains intact despite the monthly dip.
  • Interior provinces led growth this year, with Formosa and Neuquén at the top of the ranking, while the City of Buenos Aires showed far weaker expansion.
  • Dealers point to recent price list increases and stronger promotional financing on new vehicles versus costlier bank credit for used cars, and automakers signaled caution in early September after a fresh dollar spike.
