Argentina Warns of Severe Thunderstorms, Mexico Faces Polar Cold as Galicia Expects Heavy Rain on Jan. 16

Official short-term alerts call for immediate precautions against regionally distinct hazards.

  • Argentina’s meteorological service kept yellow and orange alerts in place for Jan. 16 across multiple provinces, warning of thunderstorms with intense lightning, possible hail, wind gusts up to 90 km/h and rapid downpours.
  • In Corrientes, Santiago del Estero and Tucumán, orange-level windows included locally severe storms with forecast rain totals of 60–90 mm and early-morning gusts that could reach 90 km/h, with some improvement expected by the weekend.

  • Mexico’s Conagua said Cold Front 28 and a polar air mass will drive freezing overnight lows between −5°C and 0°C in Nuevo León and more than a dozen states, with Baja California also seeing strong winds and frost; Nuevo León kept classes open but allows parental discretion below 0°C.
  • Regional forecasts in Spain’s Galicia, based on AEMET data, pointed to a wet, cool Friday with widespread rain, frequent storm chances and gusty winds in towns including Barro, A Cañiza, Meis, Mondariz, Moraña, Oia and Tui.
