Argentina Steel Production Drops Sharply in June Despite Year-Over-Year Gains

Import competition from Brazil and China is testing the fragile recovery of Argentina’s steelmakers.

Overview

  • June crude steel output fell 8.6% from May to 320,100 tonnes, while hot-rolled, primary iron and cold-rolled segments dropped between 18.4% and 26.5%.
  • All major steel categories posted double-digit year-on-year gains in June, including a 16.5% rise in crude output and over 12% increases in flat products.
  • Construction activity remains subdued and cement dispatches slipped 1%, while domestic auto production fell 11% month-on-month despite a 34% annual increase.
  • Surging imports of machinery and steel goods from Brazil and China threaten farm equipment suppliers and curb domestic white goods and packaging output even as financing schemes revive appliance purchases.
  • The Cámara Argentina del Acero expects 2025 steel demand to edge above last year’s level but remain below historical norms.
