Argentina Signals Higher Applied Election Fines, Sets Out 60-Day Process to Regularize Non-Voting

Skipping the poll triggers a 60-day window to regularize via the CNE portal to avoid administrative penalties.

Overview

  • Voting is compulsory for citizens aged 18 to 70, while 16–17 year-olds and people over 70 may abstain without sanction.
  • Although the Electoral Code lists fines of $50 to $500, recent guidance reports applied amounts around $1,000 to $2,000, so voters are urged to check the CNE’s Registro de Infractores for the current figure.
  • Voters who miss an election have 60 days to submit a valid justification—such as illness, being more than 500 km from their polling place, force majeure, or specified work duties—or to pay the fine.
  • Failure to regularize results in entry in the Registro de Infractores with administrative consequences, including limits on certain public procedures for up to one year and ineligibility for public appointments for three years.
  • The CNE portal (infractores.padron.gov.ar) lets citizens verify status, upload documents, and generate a payment slip that can be paid online or at Banco Nación and authorized payment points; consulates handle payments for residents abroad, and prior non-voting does not prevent casting a ballot in 2025.
