Argentina Shifts Holidays to Build Long Weekends as Mexico Reaffirms Sept. 16 Rules

Argentina applies a new decree to reassign trasladable dates for tourism-focused breaks, with Mexico holding a fixed Independence Day holiday that carries mandatory premium pay if worked.

Overview

  • Argentina’s Decreto 614/2025 empowers the Jefatura de Gabinete to move trasladable holidays that fall on weekends, and Resolución 139/2025 moves the 12 October holiday to Friday 10 October.
  • Buenos Aires Province formalized local September asuetos, including Baigorrita on Friday 12 September under Resolución 157/2025, adding to municipal one-offs on Friday 5 September in Colonia Seré and Monday 8 September in San Pedro, Carhué, La Niña, José Benito Casas and Colonia El Toro.
  • The 11 September Día del Maestro is a nationwide school asueto in Argentina, suspending classes for the education sector but not creating a national public holiday for other activities.
  • In Mexico, 16 September remains a mandatory federal holiday that is not moved, and workers required to labor that day must receive the regular daily wage plus double pay for the service, for a total equivalent to triple pay.
  • Mexico’s SEP calendar suspends classes on 8, 16 and 26 September, and banks will close on 16 September under the CNBV calendar, while 15 September is a regular workday at the federal level.
