Argentina Sees Strikes Slide While Public Walkouts Tick Up

Official figures show non-strike protests are surging with workers continuing to press wage and arrears claims.

  • There were 46 strike events in June, down 10% year-on-year and 22% from May as private sector walkouts fell from 18 to 10.
  • Public sector walkouts rose to 36 in June even though the number of strikers edged down 1% from 244,240 to 241,762.
  • Non-strike disputes climbed 48% to 117 events in June, driven by actions such as concentrations, mobilizations and declarations.
  • Claims for higher wages prompted 27 of June’s strikes and payment arrears spurred 6, while dismissal-related walkouts fell from 9 last year to 3.
  • Public administration, teaching, health and manufacturing sectors hosted 89% of the month’s strikes, with hotspots in Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Jujuy and Santa Cruz provinces.
