Argentina Seeks New October Opponent After Mexico Cancels Friendly

Argentina’s Football Association is seeking a new opponent for its early October friendlies in the United States after Mexico canceled its scheduled match.

Overview

  • Mexico’s federation withdrew from the Oct. 8–14 FIFA window date, leaving Argentina’s planned U.S. friendly without an opponent.
  • AFA has locked in Chicago and New Jersey as venues for the October matches and is negotiating replacements, with talks most advanced for Venezuela.
  • Argentina has already secured direct qualification and the top spot in CONMEBOL and will play its final qualifiers on Sept. 4 at the Monumental and Sept. 9 in Guayaquil.
  • Coach Lionel Scaloni is expected to use the Sept. fixtures and late-year friendlies to experiment with his squad ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup field.
  • Two November friendlies away to Angola and Qatar remain on the calendar as Argentina finalizes preparations for next summer’s tournament.
