Argentina Restores Inflation-Linked Fuel Taxes in Two Phases Starting Sept. 1

Officials frame the update as a step to repair revenue after a year of deferrals.

Overview

  • Decree 617/2025, published in the Boletín Oficial and signed by Javier Milei, Guillermo Francos and Luis Caputo, updates the ICL and IDC and repeals Decree 466/2024.
  • From Sept. 1–30, gasoline taxes rise by $11.168 per litre in total (ICL +$10.523, IDC +$0.645) and diesel by $9.555 (ICL +$8.577, IDC +$0.978), with a lower ICL for Patagonia and Malargüe.
  • The remaining deferred adjustments will be added on Oct. 1, completing the transition to fully updated fixed per‑litre amounts.
  • Fuel retailers and analysts anticipate higher pump prices, though some pass‑through could be tempered after recent 5.3%–5.5% price increases cited by an industry association.
  • The update resumes CPI‑indexed adjustments set by Law 23.966, with the government citing the need to recover pending updates and strengthen fiscal accounts.
