Argentina Restarts Inflation-Linked Fuel Taxes With September Increase

The decree revives deferred updates in two stages, lifting pump costs as the government seeks to rebuild revenue.

Overview

  • Decree 617/2025, published August 29, reinstates updates to the liquid fuels and CO₂ taxes that were postponed since 2024.
  • In September the tax step adds $10.523 per liter to nafta and $8.577 to gasoil, with CO₂ set at $0.645 for naftas and $0.978 for gasoil, plus a differential on gasoil.
  • The application is staggered: a partial adjustment from September 1–30 and the full backlog from October 1, while prior deferrals such as Decree 466/2024 are revoked.
  • Outlets estimate pump prices rise by about $10.52 per liter for nafta and $8.58 for gasoil in September from taxes alone, though station-level changes may vary with YPF’s dynamic pricing.
  • In parallel, Resolution 1253/2025 raises the Zona Fría surcharge at the PIST from 6.6% to 6.8%, and Resolution 357/2025 cuts the wholesale gas reference price by 5.49% for consumption from September, easing the wholesale charge but increasing subsidy needs.
