Argentina Puts 10 Provinces on 'Extreme' Wildfire-Risk Alert

Officials are moving to strict prevention and penalties due to dangerous heat and drought.

Overview

  • On Dec. 29, the national weather service issued an extreme wildfire-risk alert for ten provinces and urged local authorities to apply all prevention measures.
  • Experts attribute the heightened danger to extreme heat, persistent drought and other unfavorable climatic factors.
  • A National Parks resolution bans the use of fire in Lanín, Nahuel Huapi, Los Arrayanes, Lago Puelo and Los Alerces until April 30, 2026, with only tightly supervised “safe fire” allowed in authorized tourist facilities.
  • Authorities report that contravention procedures are active and that proven responsibility for starting fires will bring the maximum sanctions allowed by current regulations.
  • Patagonia Norte parks have more than 160 specialized brigadistas and expanded equipment, communications and detection technology in place for the 2025–2026 season.
