Argentina Overhauls Vehicle Emissions Certification, Recognizing International Tests

Officials say recognizing accredited foreign test reports will cut duplication, lowering import costs.

Overview

  • The Secretariat of Tourism, Environment and Sports published Resolution 546/2025 in the Official Gazette, updating procedures for the Licencia de Configuración Ambiental.
  • Accredited test reports from domestic labs and from bodies in Brazil, Japan, Chile, the United States and United Nations organizations will be accepted.
  • Existing LCAs already authorized in Argentina can now be used for importing new vehicles, ending retesting by importer or unit as emphasized by Minister Federico Sturzenegger.
  • A public database of granted licenses was created and registries were reorganized for light vehicles, heavy vehicles and engines.
  • Processing charges were set at 940 Unidades Retributivas per certification and 212 per extension, with the government framing the reform as a move to reduce costs and increase competition and transparency.
