Argentina Overhauls ID and Passport for Feb. 1 as Peru Launches Free DNIe Program

The measures align identity documents with OACI standards to strengthen security, preserving the validity of current IDs.

Overview

  • Argentina’s Renaper published Dispositions 54/2026 and 55/2026 in the Boletín Oficial, making new DNI electrónico and passport specifications effective on February 1, with previously issued documents remaining valid until expiration.
  • The updated DNIe is a multilayer polycarbonate card with laser engraving, inkjet printing and a contactless chip, and the redesign focuses on new visible Level 1 security features while Levels 2 and 3 stay unchanged.
  • Argentina’s passport shifts to a 34‑page booklet with a personalized polycarbonate data page engraved by laser, and authorities will use existing stocks during the transition without invalidating current passports.
  • New DNI rules set a 15‑year validity for holders over 14, retain mandatory renewals between ages 5–8 and at 14, adjust signature capture by age, and allow a provisional “0 Año” credential for certain newborns.
  • Peru’s Reniec began a 2026 program granting free DNIe to prioritized groups—reported to reach about 700,000 people—and confirmed the older yellow DNI remains valid until its expiry with no immediate replacement required.
