Argentina Overhauls FMD Vaccination With Calf-Focused Plan Starting in 2026

Officials frame the shift as a calibrated move enabled by Argentina's FMD-free record since 2006.

Overview

  • SENASA published Resolution 711/2025 in the Boletín Oficial, putting updated nationwide rules and digital recordkeeping for FMD campaigns into effect immediately.
  • Beginning with the second campaign of 2026, heifers, steers and young steers will no longer be vaccinated, concentrating immunization on calves.
  • Feedlots are exempt from the first annual round, with strategic vaccination schemes authorized, a change expected to trim nearly 2 million doses.
  • Campaigns are capped at 60 days in most cases and all vaccinations must be logged via the Acta de Vacunación Única in SIGSA, with livestock movements limited until records are completed.
  • The government estimates a reduction of about 16 million doses and roughly US$25 million in producer savings, as former SENASA leaders endorse the epidemiological basis yet call for stronger surveillance, lab capacity and traceability within a broader plan.
