Argentina Moves Commerce Employees’ Day to Sept. 29 as Major Retail Closes for 24 Hours

The transfer to Monday, Sept. 29 follows a sectoral pact that applies holiday protections with 100% pay for anyone required to work.

Overview

  • FAECyS confirmed the move after sealing an agreement in late August with CAC, CAME and UDECA, invoking the framework of Law 26.541.
  • Supermarkets, wholesalers and shopping centers are expected to close nationwide for the day, while small owner‑run shops may choose to open.
  • Under the statute and the CCT 130/75 coverage, employees are not obliged to work, absences do not reduce pay, and any work performed must be paid at double rate.
  • Implementation varies by branch and location: the general branch observes Monday, Sept. 29, Tourism was proposed for Saturday, Sept. 27, Contact Centers keep Friday, Sept. 26, and Santa Fe sets the last Wednesday of September.
  • The shift aligns with a patchwork calendar that includes municipal asuetos in Buenos Aires localities and the national Resolution 139/2025 moving the Oct. 12 holiday to Friday, Oct. 10 to create a long weekend.
