Argentina Marks Dec. 8 With Citywide Tree Lightings to Open the Holiday Season

The Immaculate Conception holiday serves as Argentina’s customary kickoff to public festivities that extend into January.

Overview

  • Buenos Aires switched on the Obelisco tree to launch its Navidad en la Ciudad program, featuring 17 municipal trees, about 1,700 light decorations, a mapping on the Obelisk, and performances with students and artist Fernando Dente, with displays running to January 7, 2026.
  • Rosario lit its emblematic tree at Oroño and Pellegrini around 8:30 p.m. using roughly 3,000 LED luminaires and hosted live music, with additional trees across the city on view through January 6.
  • Córdoba illuminated the more than 100‑meter installation at the Faro del Bicentenario near 9 p.m., deploying programmable Pixel RGBW LED lighting controlled remotely for animated sequences.
  • Other municipalities opened their season with community events, including Mar del Plata’s Plaza San Martín ceremony with choirs, bands and letter drop boxes, and Alto Comedero’s blessing, local performances and the lighting of its main tree.
  • Retail activity jumped on December 8 as families shopped for trees and décor — Rosario merchants reported an average ticket near 20,000 pesos — and Buenos Aires announced a touring restored historic mailbox for children’s letters to Santa starting December 10.
