Argentina LNG Project Sets Conditional FDI Window After US EXIM Backing

A US$6 billion EXIM support line is intended to unlock bank financing to allow construction to start in February 2027.

Overview

  • The Export‑Import Bank of the United States has offered up to US$6 billion of support for the Argentina LNG consortium, a development the partners say helps open the door to wider international financing.
  • YPF chief Horacio Marín set a target for a final investment decision in late November or early December, conditional on three more export‑credit agency letters of intent and commercial bank commitments.
  • If financing is secured, the consortium plans to begin initial works in February 2027, starting with a major gas pipeline, an associated oil pipeline and the LNG plant to be built in Río Negro.
  • The partners are negotiating long‑term sales with buyers in Japan, Italy and Germany and have revised FDI conditions to rely on securing about US$15 billion of committed financing rather than 90% of binding offtake contracts.
  • The full project is estimated at roughly US$51 billion with about US$29 billion expected to be disbursed after FDI, a timeline targeting operations around 2031 that could boost exports, upstream investment and local supply chains such as Entre Ríos’s silica sand and logistics work.
