Argentina Lists Five Foreign Crime and Guerrilla Groups as Terrorists

The government added the groups to its public terrorism registry to expand legal tools for international cooperation against transnational organized crime.

Overview

  • The Presidency signed a joint resolution that formally added Cártel de Sinaloa, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Los Tiguerones, FARC-EP and ELN to the Registro Público de Personas y Entidades vinculadas a Actos de Terrorismo y su Financiamiento (RePET).
  • The measure was published in the Boletín Oficial as Resolución Conjunta 5/2026 and was coordinated by the Foreign Ministry, Security Ministry, Justice Ministry and the State Intelligence Secretariat.
  • The official statement described the Colombian groups as Marxist-Leninist insurgents responsible for major humanitarian harm and described the Mexican and Ecuadorian groups as transnational criminal networks tied to drug trafficking and violence.
  • The announcement did not list new domestic operations or ongoing Argentine investigations, leaving open whether the change will trigger immediate arrests, prosecutions or enforcement actions at home.
  • The step follows recent U.S. counter-narcotics cooperation in Argentina, including a new INL regional unit and approved funding, and could ease information sharing, sanctions or asset-tracing with international partners through legal and administrative channels.
