Argentina Launches Paid Peak-Demand Cuts Program for Large Power Users

Officials present the voluntary scheme as a near-term tool ahead of a proposed US$6.5 billion grid expansion financed by a new tariff charge.

Overview

  • Resolution 379/2025 in the Boletín Oficial establishes the Demand Management Program and opens it for voluntary enrollment.
  • Eligibility is limited to GUMA, GUME and GUDIS users in the wholesale market with registered peak power above 300 kW and hourly metering.
  • Participants will be compensated in proportion to the energy they do not use during activations, with reductions treated as an additional system reserve.
  • The initiative targets summer peak hours to cut stress on the SADI and lower the risk of service interruptions.
  • The government cites programs in California, the United Kingdom and Brooklyn–Queens as precedents, and the program’s effectiveness will hinge on uptake by eligible users.
