Argentina Issues Yellow Alerts for Storms, Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

SMN links a persistent cold front to El Niño-driven volatility that could cause localized flooding, hail, service interruptions.

Overview

  • The national weather agency SMN issued yellow alerts for Wednesday for storms, persistent rain and strong winds across several provinces including Río Negro, La Pampa, San Luis and Santa Fe.
  • SMN warned the yellow-level events can cause damage and temporary interruption of daily activities and advised staying indoors, avoiding flooded streets and disconnecting electrics if water enters buildings.
  • Forecasters estimated accumulated rainfall of roughly 20–50 millimetres in affected sectors with isolated storm totals of 30–50 mm and wind speeds of 50–70 km/h with gusts that could exceed 100 km/h in parts of Salta and Jujuy.
  • Local forecasts say San Salvador de Jujuy will see several days of instability with cool, cloudy weather and isolated showers and that conditions may start to improve around Monday 19 October.
  • By contrast, AEMET-based regional forecasts for parts of Galicia, Spain, show clear, dry conditions for 14 October, underscoring regional variability in weather on the same date.
