Argentina Issues Orange Wind Alert for Río Gallegos as Yellow Warnings Expand Across Central and Southern Provinces

Officials urge precautions given high winds, heavy rain, hail risk, Zonda conditions through 14 December.

  • Río Gallegos remains under an orange wind alert from 12 Dec 09:00 to 13 Dec 08:59, with west winds of 65–80 km/h and gusts that may exceed 110 km/h, according to the SMN.
  • Yellow alerts in Tierra del Fuego and Santa Cruz call for rain totals of 10–25 mm, west winds of 50–70 km/h, and gusts above 90–100 km/h, with snowfall not ruled out at higher elevations.
  • The SMN also flags strong westerlies for Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, where gusts can top 100 km/h and may disrupt travel and services.
  • Mendoza faces a yellow advisory for Zonda winds of 30–45 km/h with gusts up to 70 km/h, followed by thunderstorms from 13–14 Dec that could bring 20–40 mm of rain, hail and gusts near 80 km/h.
