Argentina Issues Orange Storm Alerts as Mexico Eyes Winter Storm and Texas Braces for Cold Front

Linked frontal systems are driving dangerous conditions from the Southern Cone to Texas.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national weather service activated orange and yellow alerts across up to 16 provinces on Thursday, including Córdoba, Santa Fe, San Luis, Mendoza, Entre Ríos and parts of Buenos Aires.
  • Orange areas face storms that may turn locally severe with frequent lightning, hail, gusts over 90 km/h and 50–100 mm of rain in short bursts, while yellow zones are forecast 40–70 mm and gusts near 70–80 km/h.
  • Separate yellow wind alerts apply to the south of Santa Fe, northwest Buenos Aires, the south of Córdoba and La Pampa, with sustained winds of 35–55 km/h and gusts up to 75 km/h.
  • Córdoba authorities reported rainfall already exceeding 100 mm in some sectors and warned of rising rivers, urging residents to avoid crossings and follow emergency guidance.
  • Mexico’s Conagua/SMN forecasts Cold Front No. 27 and a second winter storm with very strong gusts (70–90 km/h) and possible snow or sleet in northern high terrain, while Texas is forecast to see a north‑to‑south cold front Friday bringing wind, rain and a sharp temperature drop with a Panhandle risk of wintry precipitation.
