Argentina Issues Orange Heat and Heavy-Rain Alerts as U.S. Winter Disruptions Begin to Ease

Forecasters attribute the sustained northern Argentina downpours to the Alta Boliviana plus a La Niña pattern.

Overview

  • Argentina’s weather service kept widespread yellow alerts in place for storms and heat across at least 13 to 19 provinces, warning of frequent lightning, hail and wind gusts near 70–80 km/h.
  • The City of Buenos Aires is under an orange alert for extreme temperatures through the morning of December 29, with highs forecast to reach the mid-30s Celsius during the holiday travel window.
  • Salta remains under an orange alert for heavy rainfall of 50–90 mm with potential local exceedances, intense electrical activity and wind gusts up to about 90 km/h, with rain persisting into New Year’s week.
  • Jujuy and other northern provinces are under yellow alerts for 20–50 mm of rain, possible hail and strong gusts, and Tierra del Fuego faces a yellow alert for persistent rain of roughly 10–20 mm.
  • In the United States, a NortheastGreat Lakes winter storm led to about 1,500 flight cancellations and emergency declarations in New York and New Jersey, as California continues recovery from earlier floods and landslides that killed at least three people.
