Argentina Inflation Hits 2.3% in October as Poverty Thresholds Outpace Prices

Fresh INDEC and UNICEF data show households increasingly relying on savings plus debt to cover essentials.

Overview

  • Consumer prices rose 2.3% in October, bringing inflation to 24.8% year to date and 31.3% over 12 months, with Transport up 3.5% and Housing and utilities up 2.8%.
  • Basic‑needs baskets increased 3.1% in October, putting the poverty line for a four‑person household at ARS 1,213,798.81 and the indigence line at ARS 544,304.
  • UNICEF’s latest rapid survey reports a drop in the share of households with children unable to cover current expenses, from 48% to 31% year on year, alongside persistent high child poverty at 46.1% and extreme poverty at 10.2%.
  • Household indebtedness climbed: formal debt reached 31% of families and rises to 45% when including virtual wallets and informal loans, leading many to miss bill payments or cut private health and schooling.
  • An INDEC dossier finds four in ten households used savings or sold belongings in early 2025, with borrowing and installment financing expanding to more than half of homes as labor income falls short.
