Argentina Imposes 1,000 UF Fines and 10-Point Penalties for Blurred and Unauthorized Plates

Under the new ANSV protocol, unreadable or unauthorized license tags trigger steep fines alongside automatic scoring deductions.

Overview

  • Law 24.449 mandates that all vehicles display visible, standardized plates and limits provisional tags to specific transfers approved by the DNRPA.
  • As of July 2025, the ANSV classifies any blurring, altering or lacking of license plates as a 1,000 UF infraction, roughly ARS 731,000 in Buenos Aires, with a mandatory 10-point scoring deduction.
  • Traffic inspectors may immediately retain vehicles found with unauthorized or homemade plates and refer offenders to local tribunals for sanctioning.
  • Insurers can deny damage coverage if drivers are involved in accidents while using non-compliant or provisional tags without prior legal approval.
  • The Penal Code treats the production or use of counterfeit and altered plates as identity fraud, exposing offenders to criminal prosecution.
