Argentina Finalizes Mandatory Electronic Livestock ID Effective Jan. 1, 2026

Senasa prescribes RFID devices paired with a visual tag to strengthen traceability for international market access.

Overview

  • Sales of visual-only identifiers end on Dec. 1, 2025, closing the transition to electronic identification.
  • Producers must identify animals at weaning or before first movement, and devices must remain on the animal for life.
  • Each identifier must be registered in SIGSA, with declarations allowed in offices, via self-management, or through the SIGBIOTRAZA app.
  • Senasa will supervise compliance under Law 27.233, and slaughterhouses must declare, extract, and destroy devices after slaughter.
  • Pedigree stock stays under breed-association rules with specified ear placement, and imported animals must be reidentified under the national system before release.
