Argentina Extends Storm Alerts as Unstable Pattern Persists Into Late Week

Yellow warnings now span seven provinces with forecasts of 20–40 mm of rain, hail and gusts near 70 km/h.

Overview

  • On Wednesday, the national weather service (SMN) issued yellow storm alerts for Formosa, northern Chaco, eastern Salta, southern San Luis, much of Mendoza, Neuquén and northern Río Negro, citing frequent lightning, possible hail and short‑period downpours of 20–40 mm.
  • Local guidance in Mendoza projects a stronger pulse of rainfall from Thursday into early Friday, with province‑wide showers and localized totals above 20 mm.
  • In Córdoba, Thursday’s outlook includes cooler temperatures, strong northeast gusts and SMN alerts that place the south under orange level and the northwest under yellow for storms.
  • An earlier round on Tuesday included an orange alert for central Buenos Aires province with 50–80 mm possible and gusts over 90 km/h, plus a yellow wind alert for southern Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego with southwest gusts up to 90 km/h.
  • Public advisories urge people in affected areas to stay indoors during storms, avoid corded phones and electrical appliances, remain in vehicles if traveling and cut household power if water enters; separate forecasts in Galicia (Spain) reported heavy rain and southerly gusts up to about 65 km/h on Nov. 4–5.
