Argentina Delays Rollout of New Targeted Energy Subsidies to February

The overhaul targets incomes under three basic baskets with seasonal, block-based discounts.

Overview

  • Officials told La Nacion the launch is pushed to February pending a regulatory decree and new electricity and gas price schedules.
  • With Indec’s December update of the basic basket to $1,308,713.26, the eligibility cutoff rises to three times that level, or $3,926,139.78 per household.
  • The new SEF replaces prior tiers with a binary system and applies a 50% electricity discount to defined blocks (300 kWh in high-demand months, 150 kWh in temperate months).
  • In natural gas, the 50% discount applies only from April to September, with users paying full price the rest of the year for consumption outside subsidized blocks.
  • An exceptional 25% extra bonus planned for 2026 is now reported to start in February rather than January, while estimates differ on how many will lose subsidies (government about 140,000 families versus FIEL’s higher figures).
