Overview
- INDEC finished the technical overhaul of the Consumer Price Index in March 2025, according to Chief of Cabinet Guillermo Francos.
- Agency head Marco Lavagna said changing the index now would create unnecessary noise and indicated parallel tests show monthly differences of only 0.1–0.2 percentage points versus the current measure.
- The redesign updates weights to the 2017/2018 household survey, increases the share of services such as digital platforms and mobile telephony, and contemplates expanded digital price capture including scanner data.
- Staff changes include the exit of IPC chief Georgina Giglio and the appointment of María Josefina Rim to lead the CPI from September 1, as well as the departure of poverty and labor measurement head Guillermo Manzano.
- Rim said the aim is to release the updated measure before year‑end, though timing remains undecided; the IMF urged publication as soon as possible and flagged that a precise date will be discussed at the next program review, with some reports speculating on application from January 2026, while the August CPI reading will be published after the September 7 Buenos Aires provincial election.
