Argentina Defers Fuel Tax Hike to November

Officials cast the delay as support for growth on a “sustainable fiscal path” to contain inflation.

Overview

  • Decree 699/2025, published on October 1, postpones increases to the ICL and IDC fuel taxes until November 1, revising the schedule set by Decree 617/2025.
  • The deferral covers unleaded gasoline, virgin naphtha and diesel; by law the taxes are CPI-indexed quarterly by ARCA, though the Executive has repeatedly delayed their application.
  • The move comes weeks before the October 26 legislative elections, with prior partial adjustments in September giving way to a full October freeze on these tax updates.
  • Unless delayed again, the Energy Secretariat plans to apply the accumulated increases from 2024 and the first two quarters of 2025 starting November 1, a jump analysts warn could exceed 15% at the pump.
  • Separately, regulators formalized October electricity and natural gas tariff updates averaging about 1.9%, and YPF continues operating a micropricing model without unified monthly price announcements.
