Argentina Beef Prices Reaccelerate in October, With Asado Leading Gains

A sharp rise in cattle prices in late October and early November points to further pressure on retail cuts.

Overview

  • Retail beef rose 3.3% in October, taking the year-over-year increase to 61.8%, about 30.7 points above the 31.1% general inflation rate.
  • Asado posted the biggest monthly jump at 8.2%, followed by picada especial (6.1%), matambre (5.5%) and vacío (5.3%).
  • Wholesale novillito prices climbed 4.4% in October and a further 11.4% in the first ten days of November, totaling about 16% over the last 40 days.
  • Per-capita consumption reached 49.5 kg/year on a 12‑month basis to September, up 4.4% from the prior year window but still 7.3% below the same period in 2023 as purchasing power lags.
  • Beef exports fell 10.4% in January–September versus 2024 due mainly to weaker Chinese demand, while higher relative prices are prompting households to switch toward cheaper proteins like chicken and pork.
