Argentina Auto Sales Cool in August as Used Transfers and New Registrations Slip

Pre-election uncertainty is prompting buyers to delay purchases, dealers say.

Overview

  • Used-car transfers fell to 167,525 in August, down 6.60% from July and 5.05% year over year, according to the Chamber of Automotive Commerce.
  • January–August used sales reached 1,265,292 units, a 15.08% increase over the same period in 2024, indicating strong underlying demand.
  • New-vehicle patentings totaled 54,664 in August, a 13% month-on-month decline, though registrations were 31.7% higher than a year earlier, Siomaa and Acara reported.
  • Sector representatives cite a late-July devaluation, dollar volatility, list-price increases by automakers, high bank interest rates and the electoral calendar as key drivers of deferred purchases.
  • Growth remains stronger in interior provinces such as Formosa and Neuquén, Capital Federal lags in expansion, and the Volkswagen Gol led used models with 9,172 transfers.
