Argentina Allows Civilian Semiautomatic Rifles Under Strict RENAR Permits

The measure replaces a prior ban by moving to case-by-case authorizations focused on traceability and sport justification.

Overview

  • Resolution 37/2025, signed by RENAR director Juan Pablo Allan, was published in the Official Gazette on November 4 and took effect immediately.
  • Authorizations apply to semiautomatic rifles, carbines and submachine guns with detachable magazines in calibers above .22 LR for legitimate users and approved shooting entities.
  • Applicants must precisely identify the firearm by type, brand, model, caliber, serial number and CUIM, maintain a G2 storage sector, submit an affidavit with documents and photos, and pay fees equal to Tenencia Express plus the TCCM.
  • Eligibility requires at least five years as a conditional-civil legitimate user, clean background checks, and verified sporting use through certified club activity, competition representation or an institutional request from an authorized range.
  • RENAR, now under the Security Ministry and replacing the former ANMaC structure, centralizes oversight, may request additional proof, prohibits conversion to automatic fire and transfer of the authorized possession, and voids several prior RENAR resolutions.
