Argentina Admits Olavarría Wind Farm Into RIGI as Seventh Approved Project

The 180 MW project will prioritize powering Acindar’s domestic steel plants under an in‑situ scheme that officials say improves the foreign‑exchange balance.

Overview

  • The Economy Ministry’s Resolution 1.254/2025 formalizes the entry of the 180 MW Parque Eólico Olavarría, a roughly US$275 million investment by GEAR, the venture formed by PCR and ArcelorMittal Acindar.
  • Located near Olavarría in Buenos Aires province, the plan installs 30 turbines of 6 MW each, a 33/132 kV substation, and a ~25 km 132 kV line to Transba, with upgrades at the Olavarría and Ezeiza stations, and is projected to create about 1,300 construction jobs with participation from more than 30 local suppliers.
  • All generation is reserved for Acindar’s plants in Villa Constitución, Rosario, San Nicolás, La Tablada and Villa Mercedes under a private supply arrangement, with no power exports.
  • Analyses by the Energy Secretariat, Cammesa and the Central Bank found no negative impact on the currency market and anticipate a positive FX balance through energy import substitution, while the Energy Secretariat will supervise execution.
  • The approval lifts the RIGI tally to seven projects from a larger pipeline, with about US$9.3 billion in committed investment reported.
