Argentina Activates Yellow Weather Alerts for Storms, Zonda and High Winds

A pronounced north–south thermal gradient is fueling the instability behind the warnings, with heavier Buenos Aires rain expected Tuesday.

Overview

  • Argentina’s meteorological service put yellow alerts in place today for strong storms across parts of Buenos Aires province, La Pampa, Córdoba, Mendoza and San Luis, with risks of heavy downpours, frequent lightning, hail and gusts near 70 km/h.
  • Yellow alerts for viento zonda cover the south of Mendoza, the center of San Juan and the east of La Rioja, with 30–45 km/h winds and gusts up to 75 km/h that can sharply raise temperatures, lower humidity and reduce visibility.
  • Southern Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego face yellow alerts for very strong southwest winds of 40–60 km/h with gusts that could exceed 90 km/h, potentially affecting travel and outdoor activities.
  • Greater Buenos Aires is forecast warm and mostly stable today at roughly 18–29°C, with the national service warning that rains and thunderstorms will return Tuesday with greater intensity and persistence than earlier projections.
  • Mexico’s forecast highlighted extreme same‑day temperature contrasts in Baja California (about 30–35°C in many areas versus −5 to 0°C in parts of Tijuana and Mexicali) as Melissa’s remnants linger offshore as an extratropical system, while Spain’s AEMET expects mostly cloudy skies in Galician municipalities with a higher chance of light evening rain or isolated storms.
