Arequipa Wildfires: Misti Largely Contained as Tisco Blaze’s Status Diverges

Authorities are probing human causes, from suspected land delimitation on Misti to a reported puma scare in Tisco.

Overview

  • The Misti fire that began on September 13 burned high‑Andean shrub and pasture areas in Miraflores, Mariano Melgar and Chiguata, with estimates ranging from the COER’s 48 hectares to local counts near 300 hectares.
  • The Tisco blaze was reported around 7 p.m. on September 15 with initial official estimates of at least 50 hectares affected, while the district mayor later cited about 300 hectares.
  • Local reports said the Tisco fire was brought under control during the early hours, though COER updates described partial control with flare‑ups later in the day.
  • More than 200 responders worked the Misti front, with firefighters, police and municipal crews reinforced by COER brigadistas and Army personnel who hiked into steep, rocky terrain under strong winds and very dry fuels.
  • Serfor reported habitat losses for at least 50 plant species on Misti, including 15 listed as vulnerable and eight endemic, and warned of administrative fines up to 10 UIT and possible criminal action if responsibility is confirmed.
