Arequipa Prosecutors Seek 7-Day Detention in Ocoña Bus Crash That Killed 37

Prosecutors seek seven-day detention to secure the pickup driver during new alcohol analyses.

Overview

  • An interprovincial bus of the Llamosas company plunged roughly 200 meters after a collision at km 780 of the Panamericana Sur in Ocoña, leaving 37 dead and 25 injured.
  • The pickup driver, Henry Apaclla Ñaupari, 35, is under investigation for aggravated negligent homicide and negligent injuries and remains in police custody after discharge from a Camaná hospital.
  • Alcohol screening produced conflicting results: a positive qualitative test at the scene and later quantitative readings of 0.11 g/L (Fiscalía) or 0.25 g/L (PNP), both below the 0.50 g/L legal limit, from samples drawn 6–10 hours after the crash.
  • Prosecutors ordered complementary and retrospective alcohol analyses, while police conduct crash reconstruction, vehicle examinations, and other urgent forensic procedures.
  • The Institute of Legal Medicine identified all 37 victims using AFIS, with about 90% of remains delivered to families, and six injured patients still hospitalized in Camaná as others were transferred to Arequipa facilities.
