ARD Agrees to Cut 16 DAB+ Radio Stations by 2027

The plan is driven by frozen broadcasting fees; regional bodies must end selected DAB+ services, migrating content to the ARD-Audiothek.

Overview

  • Intendanten from all nine ARD Landesrundfunkanstalten approved a radiostrategy to shrink the network from 69 to 53 channels in line with federal requirements.
  • The reductions target at least 16 terrestrially broadcast stations, focusing on DAB+-only offerings such as BR Heimat, MDR Schlagerwelt and NDR Info Spezial.
  • Content from discontinued channels will be assessed for inclusion in the ARD-Audiothek to preserve niche programming through digital delivery.
  • Each regional broadcaster will decide which services to terminate and must secure legislative adjustments in state treaties by January 1, 2027.
  • Broadcasters may merge overlapping formats in cooperative programs to maintain genre diversity while cutting duplicated Schlager, Klassik and youth stations.
