Arctic Surge Reinforces Mexico’s Cold Front as U.S. Faces Thanksgiving Winter Storm

Forecasters warn a midweek Arctic push will intensify the front.

Overview

  • Mexico’s Frente Frío 16 is in place and will be reinforced Wednesday–Thursday by a maritime polar/Arctic air mass, bringing a marked temperature drop, heavy to intense rain in Puebla, Veracruz and Oaxaca, and a strong Norte event.
  • SMN forecasts Norte wind gusts of 70–90 km/h with 2–3 m seas in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, with 40–60 km/h gusts and elevated surf along parts of the Gulf and Pacific coasts.
  • Overnight minima are forecast to fall to −5°C to 0°C with frosts in multiple highland states and to near −10°C in pockets of Chihuahua and Durango from mid to late week.
  • Despite the cold outbreak, SMN expects extreme daytime heat up to 40°C on Wednesday across roughly a dozen southern and western states including Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Campeche and Yucatán.
  • In the United States, NWS and SPC expect a Thanksgiving-period winter storm with heavy and lake-effect snow and strong winds across the Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes, alongside a risk of severe storms and damaging winds in parts of the southern and central states.
