Arctic Outbreak to Spawn Mediterranean Cyclone as Italy Braces for Heavy Rain and Low-Level Snow

Meteorologists expect a late‑week peak as a Tyrrhenian low deepens, with severe conditions on central-southern coasts plus unusually low snow in the North.

Overview

  • Forecasts from IlMeteo.it indicate Arctic air is entering the Mediterranean, with a developing low over the Tyrrhenian expected to drive a marked deterioration from Friday.
  • Through Wednesday and Thursday, the North turns colder with Alpine snow near 1,000 meters while the Centre-South faces rain and thunderstorms, especially across Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise and later Campania.
  • From Friday into Saturday, snow could drop to roughly 200–300 meters across Piemonte, Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, with a chance of locally lower elevations in low Piedmont and Emilia.
  • Strengthening Bora and Grecale winds are forecast to reinforce the chill and produce very rough seas, particularly along the Ionian side and near Sicily and Sardinia.
  • Temperatures are projected to fall sharply, in places by around 10°C versus recent values, with overnight frost possible on parts of the Po Valley, though exact snow lines and timing remain uncertain.
