Arctic Air to Spawn Mediterranean Cyclone, Bringing Epiphany Snow and Storms in Italy

Forecasters attribute the shift to an Arctic surge that will deepen a Mediterranean low, driving several days of severe weather.

Overview

  • Rain and thunderstorms expand on Monday across the Centre-South as much colder air arrives, with very cold conditions in the North and possible plain snow in Emilia-Romagna.
  • The most intense phase is expected around Tuesday and Wednesday of Epiphany, with snow down to low elevations or plains in parts of Lombardy east, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna and the Marche.
  • Hill-level snowfall is forecast for Tuscany and Umbria, with Messaggero indicating low-level snow spreading across Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo on Tuesday and reaching Molise from Wednesday.
  • An initial disturbance on Sunday brought heavy rain to central regions and Apennine snow around 1,400–1,500 meters, while the North started more stable but cold.
  • Forecasters warn of hydrogeological risks from intense rain in some areas, and some outlets project the cold may persist with another peak around 8–9 January.
