Arctic Air and Cold Fronts Drive Snow, Gales and Sharp Temperature Drops in Mexico and Spain

Forecasters warn of low snow levels with hazardous winds under an evolving frontal pattern.

Overview

  • Mexico’s weather service reports Frente Frío 15 is now impacting the northwest and north with chubascos, strong to very strong gusts of 60–80 km/h and conditions for snow or sleet in the sierras of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa and Durango.
  • Minimums of −10 to −5 °C with frost are forecast in high terrain of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango, while the Valley of Mexico starts the day cold with 9–11 °C in the capital and heladas in surrounding highlands.
  • The SMN notes the current front will be followed by another frontal system entering the northwest later this week, prolonging low temperatures, strong winds and intermittent precipitation.
  • Spain’s Aemet has issued a special warning for an Arctic air intrusion, with the peak from late Thursday into Friday bringing widespread frosts, snow down to roughly 300–400 meters in the north and east, and disruptive winds that could affect key roads.
  • Regional contrasts persist in South America, with Mendoza, Argentina, holding near 32–35 °C and under a yellow alert for strong winds on Thursday, as the national service flags wind and rain alerts today for parts of La Pampa, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.
