Overview
- Arcom on Monday issued a formal mise en demeure to CNews after transcribing and analysing 168 hours across 146 programmes and concluded the channel showed a “manifest and durable” imbalance in viewpoints.
- The regulator said March 2025 coverage repeatedly framed immigration, Islam and security as threats, amplified criticism of the executive and the EU, expressed distrust of the judiciary and systematically attacked La France Insoumise.
- The action follows a January 2026 complaint from Reporters Without Borders and is the first formal use of the Conseil d'État’s 2024 ‘pluralisme élargi’ test that reviews hosts, pundits and guests, not just politicians’ speaking time.
- Arcom warned CNews to take corrective measures or face sanctions that can include fines or, in extreme cases, measures on its broadcast licence, and announced a planned September monitoring of the four TNT news channels to detect future breaches.
- CNews immediately said it will appeal to the Conseil d’État and possibly European courts, while observers note the decision raises stakes for how French regulators will police opinion-driven news coverage ahead of the 2027 presidential campaign.
