Archives Admits Error in Release of Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s Military File as Democrats Seek Criminal Probe

The National Personnel Records Center says a technician improperly sent her largely unredacted personnel file to a Republican requester.

Overview

  • NPRC Director Scott Levins notified Sherrill that her full Official Military Personnel Folder was released in error, including her Social Security number, date of birth, addresses and performance evaluations.
  • NARA said the staffer failed to follow standard procedures, apologized, initiated a review of internal controls and alerted the agency’s inspector general.
  • The records and contemporaneous program materials indicate Sherrill did not participate in the Naval Academy’s 1994 commencement, which she attributes to refusing to report classmates involved in a cheating scandal.
  • The file was provided to Nicholas De Gregorio, an ally of GOP candidate Jack Ciattarelli, after a FOIA request, and De Gregorio says he then shared it with Ciattarelli associates.
  • House Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries, called for a criminal investigation into the unauthorized disclosure as the governor’s race tightens and Ciattarelli’s campaign presses attacks over the episode.
