Arc and Curtin Maritime Sign $160 Million Contract for Eight Hybrid-Electric Ship-Assist Tugboats

The privately funded order signals that hybrid-electric tugs can compete on cost without subsidies.

Overview

  • Eight tugs valued at about $20 million each are on order, with the first four committed for delivery before the end of 2027.
  • Each vessel will use over 4,000 horsepower of electric propulsion and a 6 MWh battery buffer in an electric-first hybrid setup with a diesel generator for backup.
  • The design supports megawatt-class shore charging, with Arc planning MCS installations at the Port of Los Angeles.
  • Arc will provide vertically integrated electric powertrains, while Curtin Maritime and Snow & Co. will handle design and construction on the U.S. West Coast.
  • The companies say the program will lower fuel and maintenance costs, boost reliability, and prove commercial viability versus diesel without relying on grants.
